Our Orthodox Wedding Ceremony
We’re honored to share this sacred and meaningful ceremony with you. Rooted in centuries of tradition, an Orthodox wedding is a deeply symbolic and spiritual service that reflects the beauty of faith, love, and commitment. Here’s a guide to help you know what to expect during our ceremony, including details about standing, seating, and the rich symbolism we’ll experience together.
The Orthodox Wedding Experience
An Orthodox Christian wedding is a historic and sacred rite that unites a couple in the presence of God. The service is filled with ancient rituals and symbols, such as:
The Betrothal: The exchange of rings, which occurs at the doorway of the church, symbolizing our commitment and love.
The Crowning: Crowns are placed on our heads, representing our shared journey and spiritual union.
The Common Cup: A shared sip of wine, signifying our life together in joy and sacrifice.
The Ceremonial Walk: A procession led by the priest, celebrating our new life as a married couple.
These moments, accompanied by acapella singing and prayers, create a joyful and reverent atmosphere.
Practical Tips
Duration: The ceremony will last 45–60 minutes, followed by a reception in the nearby Parish Hall and adjacent grassy area.
Standing During the Service: In Orthodox tradition, guests typically stand throughout the ceremony as a sign of reverence and participation, reflecting the active role of the community in the ceremony. We encourage most people to stand because there is limited seating available. If you have a need for special seating, please let us know on the RSVP page.
Outside Listening and Seating Option: Outside the front door of the church, a sound system will be broadcasting the service. You will find extra seating there, which may be helpful for families with children who might need a break during the ceremony. There may be incense used during part of the ceremony. If you are sensitive to scents/perfumes, you may want to consider using this outside option.
Attire: Church attire (dressy casual), with comfortable shoes for standing during the ceremony and the outdoor reception.
Photography and videography should be limited during the service to maintain its sacred nature, and cellphones must be turned off.
We’re excited to share this sacred moment with you and celebrate the start of our marriage. Thank you for being part of our day!
